June News from Marilyn at MK’s Sew-Able

It’s been a while so make a cuppa, sit down and relax to catch-up with Marilyn at MK’s Sew-Able.

Hello Sewing Friends.

It’s been a while so make a Cuppa, sit down, relax, and catch-up with Marilyn at MK’s Sew-Able.

I guess the news that’s on everyone’s lips is, MK’s Sew-Able IS for Sale. This is a wonderful local business, created by me and built by listening to your needs, a business with the potential to diversify into other areas. For Genuine enquiries, please contact me for an appointment to discuss this further.

Phone the Shop 0746 388 288 or by email at mkworking@bigpond.com.

My realtor has suggested that I reduce my stock cost for any prospective purchaser. You will notice that I will be having more than the normal EOFY and Carnival Sales.

Please be aware that on windy days, the front entry door can be pulled open by the force of the wind, this can be very sudden and we have had 2 Glass panels smashed in the past. On these days, we will have a sign on the door to say that the door is locked. Beside the danger of having the door slam into you or wrenching your shoulder, there is also the chance that if you are parked too close to the door, your car will be damaged.

PFAFF Quilt Binding Attachment $159.00. I am playing with this and hope to be competent when you want to come for a look. You do need a special foot plate, but if you have purchased the Expression 710 720 or the Performance or Icon machines, you will have the correct plate on your machine.

PFAFF has introduced new machines to the range. There are additions to the Ambition line, the Ambition 610 at $1490 and the Ambition 630, at $2190.

The Expression 710 is now on my bench at $3590, a saving of $1000.

The Expression 720 has much to offer the Specialist wanting to go further than just stitching. I enjoyed selling this one, a pleasure to stitch on. Special price $4590.

I had a few problems producing this newsletter. It seemed that every button I pushed was the wrong one, so I called on Carolyn Brown of Time Made and now I am up and running again. She is so helpful and so patient. Check out her site https//timemade.com.au

I will leave you at this time but you will have my emails more frequently in the future as I try to decrease these stock levels. Don’t forget to check the Blog from time to time.

Until next time, Take care of each other, Take time to Stitch, and Remember, If you see someone without a Smile, give them one of Yours, it’s Free.

News March 2019

MARCH 2019

Hello Sewing Friends

Welcome to another newsletter from me at MK’s Sew-Able. I hope you will this informative and hopefully interesting. I struggle writing these letters as I often wonder what you want to hear, so in the end, I just prattle and hope you find something of interest to you.

Firstly I would like to express my condolences to anyone who has lost a loved one recently. It is so hard to imagine life without someone who was always there, and then, suddenly gone. I hope you will take the offered strength and love from your family and friends. I am always a little more fragile at this time of year so when last Monday, we had a mini reunion with a special Aunt, it reminded me of how important memories are and how important it is to keep contact with the living as well.

How are you coping with the sudden heat-wave, it is rather draining isn’t it? We don’t have air-con at home so it’s full blast fans and open windows. I am suffering from sinus and the fans are drying my eyes but that’s only a minor hiccup, back to the shop air-con tomorrow. I may be feeling a little discomfort but I don’t have animals suffering with the drought. I had a customer in last week, her free motion foot had broken and she was anxious to get a new one. She said they have been in drought for 20 years and the sewing machine keeps her sane. I feel for these lovely ladies. We complain about our dry lawns and wilting flowers but we don’t have to see the devastation that they have to cope with daily.

Sad loss of another local business:

Quote from- Central Jewellers – closing it’s doors. ” Sales practices have changed and people these days are accustomed to buying only when things are on sale. People want the quality product but they don’t want to pay that price

“Quote from CTPUB.com: In this day and age, with so much commerce on the Internet, it is critical that we all support our local quilt shops. Every year, more and more of these shops are closing, and that breaks my heart. A friend who owns a shop tells me people will often come in and ask for help choosing fabrics, then write down the information on the bolt and leave—presumably to order it online. This is extremely distressing to me. And why is it so important to support your local quilt shop?

“Shopping online may save you a dollar or two, but you don’t get the benefit of the experienced sales people who can help you find that right fabric, offer advice when you hit a snag, or tell you how to accomplish something you haven’t done before. It is the local shop where you can take a class, look through a book, or connect with other quilters. It is the local shop that will help you find the right sewing machine, show you how to use it, answer your questions when you run into trouble, and service it when needed.”

The above quotes are two recent items I posted on MK’s SewAble Facebook page.

What’s moving at MK’s Sew-Able?

Fabric and backing, of course, is always on the move. Rulers and Templates have been in an extra hurry to leave us as well. A big seller has been the Quick Curved Rulers and Patterns, this has been encouraged by the class with Bev McLune. This stock is on special at 20% off.

Sewing Baskets, Ports, Bags, and storage holders have moved during our sale.

I still have a quantity of Machine Embroidery Design discs available at greatly reduced prices, you may be surprised at what is still on offer.

Have you taken the time to look at the amount of Sue Daley patterns and papers in stock at MK’s? There are patterns for little things like Pin cushions up to Quilts. Check out the increasingly popular Classics, like the Sunflower, Dahlia and Arkansas star, these are 12″ finished blocks.

Stitchery patterns have been busy with lots of interest in the Australian Afternoon and Noah’s Ark two of the best sellers. McKenna Ryan is always a  favourite.

What’s been happening at MK’s Sew-Able?

I feel like there’s something happening every day, I only wish I was finishing as many projects as I see finished in the shop.

Bev McClune spent a day with our group to make the ‘Fun Poinsettia Block’ and there has been some stunning results, I have posted a picture at the top of this newsletter.

If you are reading this mail with an ipad or phone, you may not be able to download the photos so go to www.sewable.com.au  and go to Blog to view this email with photos.

We have Sit’n’Sew on Tuesday and Fridays, these ladies love to hand sew, Knit, Crochet, do Stitchery, English Paper piece, Sashiko and much more, Sharon was tracing dress patterns on Friday. It’s lovely to see the ladies wearing their home made dresses, I hope you get the opportunity to see Janine (staff) in her black and white spot dress that she made recently, very 60’s Rocker. I also hope you get to see some of the Bags that Janine makes, it seems,a new one every week, we have a few Sample bags from Monica Poole hanging in the Shop.

We have a group using Sewing Machines on Wednesdays, these ladies are doing a lot of UFO work and have done a couple of classes with me, in particular, the Shady Daisies quilt and the results are stunning. It has been good to revisit this quilt.

These ladies have convinced me to do a Stack and Whack class on the 20th March, this is filling fast, there is not much time to get booked and to do the prelim homework prior to class day.

I am starting a total Patch work beginner on Wednesday, using Sue Daley’s lovely ‘Key Lime Pie’, a pattern with Stitch and Flip, English paper piecing, Needle turn applique and of Quilting and Binding, I am sure we will have fun with this one. We might even get a few more started with us.

I normally reserve Thursday for the Machine Embroidery ladies, been a little slack but I am working on something to happen soon. A few ladies will be starting the Singer Isabella Quilt so if you have the Project Book and want to get started, book as per the following calendar. I will send out an April date to do the ‘Birds of a Feather Milk/Jug cover’ by Tracey Sims designs.

The 4th Saturday morning of each month is used for English Paper Piecing club, I supply a set of papers to create a Mug Rug or Cookie Catcher, using new papers shapes. You bring  your fabric, needle, glues etc. cost is only $10.

The 4th Saturday afternoon is for Sashiko with a new fabric traced design each month and at the low cost of $15.

A lot of Saturdays are in use with Kerry Grose’s ‘Viva La Triangle’ quilt, we are powering along to enable an early end of year finish.

We have had a great day with Cath from Blessington creating a Software embroidry Cross-stitch project, Cath will be back with more later in the year.

We have also had another Free motion quilting class with Chris Dowell, the talent shared by Chris is so special. Everyone goes home happy. Some ladies get special tuition on the Sweet 16 and this has become quite a popular addition to the class.

I have taken my due ration, and had to subdue Janine’s enthusiasm. Mk’s is also stocking ‘Tracey Sims Embroidery Design Books and CD’s, along with the Zundt metallic thread, this is amazing thread. I am not afraid to use it anytime.  Tracey Sims designs are magnificent, I have stitched out the Cardinal and Berries (for a Table Runner ,on Fairy Frost fabric)  from the ‘Christmas Traditions Book’, and the Blue Wren from ‘Birds of a Feather’, that we will be running workshops with, beautiful. Pop in to the shop to see these samples. Tracey is Ambassador for PFAFF and Blessington is stocking her Designs and Zundt threads. This makes for simple ordering. Monica Poole applique animals are still hot sellers, It is lovely to see the many results and interpretations of her designs. Monica’s bag patterns are moving well. Sashiko samplers, Runners, Wall Hangers, Coasters and Panels are great gift ideas, made or give as a Hobby gift. I am loving the Red background .  ‘Round We Go’ by Sue Daley is still going around. I have new stock on the shelf again. I am so pleased with the continued response to this BOM, as I am with the ‘Sundance’, ‘Forget Me Not’ and ‘Sue’s Florals’ fat quarter packs. Well I’m on a roll so I’d best stop or this will be the January news. I said at the beginning of my news that we have been busy and it is with pride that I say I am very happy with my little corner of the world. I do forget to cater to some little matters at times and I have had to apologise to people who has had to wait a little longer for an order because I wrote it on a missing piece of paper, shocking to admit that.  BUT we now have a new rule, NO PIECES OF PAPER, we write it in the book and it is working, as long as I’m not asked while I’m in the back end of the shop, because I am apt to forget it before I get back to the counter.  I will be sending another mail before the 22nd December. I will include dates for the February classes. Until next time, keep Smiling, and Remember that if you see Someone without a Smile, Give them one of Yours, you will make their day a little brighter, and with the rush and panic of this time of year, we do forget to Smile, Remember, this is a Special time, a time of Happiness, Peace and Joy, so allow some Peace for yourself as well. Cheers  Marilyn K of MK’s Sew-Able

We held a day for the Junior ladies during the July school break and we had a wonderful time doing Monica Poole’s Appliques. My grand-daughters certainly enjoyed their day and are quite excited about coming in for another holiday at the end of the September break. I will try to set-up a little project for the Juniors again.
How the months are flying!!! It is just 6 weeks to the Carnival of Flowers and the Toowoomba Quilt Show 22nd September to 28th September, this year’s theme is ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful”. We are busy at MK’s, making samples, cutting pre-cuts and kits. A little change to our stall this year with a new approach to stocking the stand, but don’t worry, there will still be lots of the ‘normal’ stock on show. I hope to show a different  ‘Bali Wedding Star’ Runner each day, the ladies have produced stunning results and it will be a pleasure showing them to you. We have also had a tremendous response to Monica Poole’s Animal Applique designs, so we will have quite a few samples and kits for these as well. A great attraction  to our stand this year, Cath Quinlan from Blessington (Cath from PFAFF) will be at my stand Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th September. Cath will be showing the brilliance of the new PFAFF ICON Embroidery / Sewing and Quilting machine. This is truly an amazing machine, easy threading, so much space, vision and beautiful in-built Stitches and Embroideries. We will of course have the Sweet 16, Expression 4.2 and the Passport machines available for demonstration as well. I haven’t locked a day with Chris Dowell but I am sure we will welcome her for a sit and show day.
I will, of course, have English Paper Piecing stock and displays, we will be showing a few of our Mug Rugs but also some of the new “Classics”, which will be introduced as our monthly club projects from October. I will also have at least one block of Sue Daley’s newest release, block of the month, “Abbie”. This also has a delightful fabric range and I hope to also have some pre-cut packs to suit. Visit our stand for a demo if you aren’t quite sure how to get started. I love showing the Sue Daley way.
Sashiko Club has grown to a surprisingly big group, see what we’ve been doing and opt-in to join us. Samples of our club work will be on display.
I will hang Pam’s wonderful ‘Friends’ from William Morris, we had it up last year but now it is quilted and finished. We may also hang Pam’s Singer quilt “Isabella”, this is going to be a block of the month option for 2019.
The “Grose on You” quilt is going along well with great attendance numbers. You will see samples for this great Quilt as You Go, 9 block Sampler. The colours are fabulous.

The shop has been quite busy with many new faces arriving daily. Newcomers are surprised at the size of MK’s and certainly surprised by the range of fabrics and the diversity of stock we carry. The range of Sue Daley designs and accessories is always a talking point. Especially, the lovely bright colours of the Lace Zips that are used in many of Sue’s bags etc. We have sold a lot to the ladies using the Veronica Appleyard Pretty Pocket pencil cases.
The full range of Karen Kay Buckley Scissors are now available with the new Orange template scissors on the shelf. Check these great scissors at a great price.

Michele Hill with William Morris is also well represented with both the Morris Applique books available, plus Afternoon tea with May Morris and the beautiful Beatrix Potter book.

Have you checked out our Sashiko stock lately? We now have new Samplers, Panels and Fabric, as well as a good variety of Threads and Accessories.
The DMC stranded embroidery thread is well stocked and now includes the 35 new colours. Check our Stitchery patterns by Leah Paech, The Birdhouse, Crabapple Hill and many more….

I recently took a 2 week home break and I am proud to say that I don’t think I was missed all that much either. The ladies on staff, Leanne and Janine, with Kate backing them up, have done a wonderful job of holding the fort. It’s great to take time out knowing that I have such competent people taking care of things for me. Thank you ladies, I am enjoying my working days with you.
Well it’s time to get this in the send box, don’t forget to follow us on Facebook or check the blog through my website, www.sewable.com.au.  I will sign off with my normal good thoughts and a quote of unknown origin, ” If you see someone without a Smile, Give them One of Yours”. You know it costs nothing but normally it makes you and the receiver feel good.
Happy Sewing. Safe Travel.
