August News

Hello Sewing Friends

A quick update of shop news and upcoming events.
The fabric sale went quite well and some say, over too quick, but I will hold more in the future.
The Australiana fabric has some gaps on the shelf at the moment but it is on order and ready to be shipped out soon.
There are some nice new fabrics, including a pretty Christmas Cardinal  and a Solar Plant print that is attracting the attention of a few.
Patterns are on the move, Sue Daley’s new pattern BirdSong sold quickly, and The Birdhouse bag pattern, Eva Zip Tote is selling fast and sewing up beautifully.

Leesa Chandler has a new pattern, Oriental Blue Work, which has sold out first day but a new order is in the system.  Sharyn’s fabric selection for the Oriental Blue Work  is special and I can’t wait to see her first block, hopefully she will let me post it to face-book and blog.

Kate has only to add the borders to her adaption of ‘ Beyond the Porch’, I will post it in it’s current status, without the borders, so you can see her clever stitchery work. I wonder what Natalie Bird of The Birdhouse, will think of it. I have yet to start but I may try to rope in some home-help on the tracing the stitchery designs.

I am still short on class dates, I am getting desperate enough to consider leading a few myself but , with low staffing numbers, it is hard to organise, we are working on it.

The Machine Embroidery group is still meeting on the 2nd Thursday of each month, and they are making wonderful objects, such as last months Appliqued Table Centre. I have a couple of photos that I will post to the Blog and Face book. I’m sorry I can’t figure how to post photos in here.

Thursday, the 10th August. Machine Embroidery class is a beautiful Cutwork Doiley (see small photo insert) Dianne has stitched this out on Fairy Frost with Crystal Organza behind the cut-work lace design. We are doing and seeing quite a few of the Sweet Pea embroidery patterns, they are good to help learn your machine and to understand Machine Embroidery Applique and Techniques.

It doesn’t matter what brand of machine you have, we can help you, or I should say, Dianne can help you. We have a few Brother and Janome ladies and 1 Husqvarna lady who regularly come to class and are very happy with their achievements. We welcomed Dorothy to our group in July.
Wednesday the 16th August will see our next bag day when Sharon will help you make a lovely Box Pleat Purse, there are 2 seats left, if you are interested, I am planning on making these pursesfor my grand-daughters as Christmas gifts, if their Mums are lucky, I may make one for the Mums as well. These are ideal as small Clutches for young ladies, an over-night Cosmetic purse or for those special bits we pack on trips, it is surprising how much it expands with those box pleat inserts.
Saturday 26th August is English Paper Piecing morning. Just to relieve any boredom (seldom happens – we are too excited to be bored and in such good company)  we will be doing a Pin Cushion and  a Mug Rug design. We welcomed Vic in July and I am pleased to say that she is now one of My Merry Mates for Sit’n’Sew.

Saturday 16th September to Friday 22nd September is the week of the Toowoomba Quilters Club, Quilt Show at the Salo Centre Rome Street Toowoomba. Please check my blog or go to the TQC website to see a full guide to the exciting exhibitions around town.

This final Section of my Newsletter deals with a special project I am putting together to raise funds to help with the fight against Cancer. Sadly, we are all touched by this scourge, either personally or we know someone who is affected, or has lost the fight.  If a dollar taken at our event raises the hope of a cure from this dreadful disease, then the effort to do something, is no effort at all. I am a Cancer Survivor – how wonderful it would be if everyone could be.
Monday 28th August is my special Sew-along Fund-raising event for the Cancer Council. I will be posting this on my Blog and Face-book with updated details as I add items to the Day’s criteria.
We are Planning: A sit-down Sew, Make and Take day with up to 50 Participants.
We are Making: A Table runner using the Ribbon Dance pattern-3 are pictured in the large Insert.
Where is this happening: We will be holding this event at the Baptist Community Church ( The Toowoomba Quilters new Club room) on the corner of Greenwattle St and 100 Glenvale Rd.
The Time of this Event: Arrival for set-up at 8.30am.  9am start – finish at 2.30pm.
Cost differs: My kit includes Fabric for the top $45. You supply your own Fabric $ 30.  Either option provides you with A ticket in the Quilt Raffle, a Lucky Door ticket and a small Thank you gift. The Cancer Council will receive all monies from these costs.
This is a class requiring a Sewing machine. You may have the opportunity to use a loan machine on the day but you must be quick to book for this as I have a limited stock for use.
You will have take home Instructions and many Helpers and Hints to assist you on the day.
Food and Drink: Morning tea will be provided. Please bring lunch.
Shopping opportunities: I will bring some shop with me but these items will mainly be bits and bobs that you may forget, pins etc. BUT, anyone wanting to make and donate any sale-able item to lift the kitty for Cancer, please contact me or bring your Priced and packaged items to the shop.
My Hope for the Day is to raise money for the fight against Cancer and that everyone will complete a Table Runner top, or if not, be confident to finish it at home. DO NOT PANIC in regard to the number of people on seats, you will be assisted.
The Toowoomba Quilters Club has been very Generous and Helpful in assisting me to bring this to fruition. They are gathering Angels to help on the day, for ironing, to set up and help with Morning tea set-up and clean-up. Thank you Genelle, Fay, and Angels.
More information will be given as required. I am putting a pamphlet together, out-lining the full agenda.I will post this on the Blog and Face-book and I will send another detailed reminder in the near future.

Machine Embroidery Club

This Thursday 13th July is Machine Embroidery Club. The project is the Leaf Table Centre pattern from Sweet Pea Embroidery. I think the large size would be perfect for a Christmas Tree Skirt, and it is only 167 days until Christmas.
